Dental Cleaning & Prevention
A preventive program at Silvertooth and Whinery Family Dental is a cooperative effort between the patient, dentist, and dental staff aimed at preserving natural teeth and supporting structures by preventing the onset, progress, and recurrence of dental diseases and conditions.
What To Expect During A Cleaning Appointment
During your cleaning, a dental hygienist will use a small mirror to examine your teeth and gums, remove plaque and tartar with a scaler, and clean your teeth with a special toothbrush and toothpaste. The hygienist may also use a water pick to remove debris and will polish your teeth to remove stains.
Benefits Of Regular Cleanings
Regular cleanings and preventive care prevent cavities and gum disease, improve oral health, and boost self-esteem by keeping your teeth looking their best. They also help detect dental issues early, allowing for prompt treatment.
Types Of Prevention
Dental Exams & Cleanings
Regular dental exams and cleanings are crucial for preventing dental disease. During an exam, we check for cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer, and assess your risk for other dental problems. Cleanings include thorough plaque and tartar removal and tooth polishing.
X-Rays
X-rays are essential for detecting problems not visible to the naked eye, such as cavities between teeth and bone infections. We take a full series of x-rays every 3-5 years, or more frequently if needed.
Home Care
Good oral hygiene at home is vital for preventing dental issues. Brush at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush, floss daily, and maintain a balanced diet. Avoid sugary drinks, snacks, and sticky foods.
Proper Brushing & Flossing
Proper brushing and flossing are essential for oral health. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, replace it every 3-4 months, and floss daily. If flossing is difficult, a water flosser can be helpful.
Sealants
Sealants are thin, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars to prevent cavities. They fill grooves and pits, making it hard for plaque and food particles to adhere. Sealants are commonly applied to children’s teeth but can also benefit adults.
